KALASUNGAY, Malaybalay City – Villagers here have jointly raised funds to help build the pathway to its old cemetery, spending the Kalag-kalag (All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day vacation) with a slight twist.

When members of the village’s Kalasungay Association of Professionals sold raffle tickets — visitors to the cemetery obliged and bought tickets as a way to help.

Richel Okit, president of KAPs, Inc. said efforts paid off to vend the tickets on Nov. 1 and 2 along the rugged pathway to the public cemetery.

Okit said he hoped that by next year when visitors again honor their dead in the village, the pathway would already be concrete.

Tickets, sold at P5 each, were offered to the visitors by volunteers of the group. At the end of the day, as winners were drawn (see results in page __), the group raised a net income of at least P33, 000.

The fund-raising activity was meant to help the Barangay Government initiate the project to address the problem of muddy pathway, Okit said.

KAPs, Inc. formed last year, is a community-based organization of residents of Kalasungay who are working or non-working professionals.
